August is here!

How could I let August pass by without a blog post! It is my favorite month :D

Well, hello all! Assalammualaikum. How is your Ramadhan so far?

Alhamdulillah, like previous years, this year's Ramadhan ain't that bad. After 4 years of Ramadhan abroad, I am used to fasting long hours under a hot scorching sun. Well, I stayed inside most of the time ;p  And insya-Allah this will be my last Syawal di perantauan. My heart is no longer aching listening to Raya songs. Jiwa sudah kental.

My raya prep is not in full swing just yet, hopefully this weekend I could get to bake some kuih raya. Yes, you read it right. I plan to make kuih raya instead of asking mom to mail it from Malaysia. Semangat! Semangat itu penting okeh :p  I will have matching baju raya with Faliela as well :D

Speaking about last Syawal, my application for scholarship extension has just been approved. The not-so-good news is they approved it until March and I planned to stay until June. Right now, I am still undecided whether I would like to finish up everything by March or stay until the commencement (convocation) ceremony in June. My boss has actually agree to cover my stipend if I decided to stay.  On the other hand,  I could come back just for the ceremony but spending RM10k for 3 flight tickets is not my priority. Yes, PhD is a big deal and a long painstaking journey and I really would like to walk so I am in dilemma right now.

I just finished with data analysis and now the fun part begins (or maybe not)- statistical analysis. So, I will vanish once again until I have the powerpoint slides for my conference presentation all ready. Hopefully soon.

Until then, enjoy the pictures of my lil girl.

Her pit stop before entering our house. She LOVES to climb and her daycare provider actually mentioned to us, Faliela is the most active girl she's ever seen of that age. Sometimes she does make us wonder how will it be having a baby boy.

San Francisco Zoo. She LOVES penguin. She actually wanted to climb the gate to catch the penguins.

Mommy, can I give these oranges to the penguins?

And again, she wanted to climb the wall to get to the flamingo birds.

Rocky likes to peek whenever Faliela takes her bath. Now, it was Faliela's turn.
We have successfully bonded her with her first bantal busuk- a doll named Leha. Leha is adorable, isn't she?

Faliela's birthday and the trip to Yosemite!

The only time I can blog at home : when both husband and daughter take their nap ;)
So, lets make this quick!
Faliela's 1st birthday party
We decided to throw a birthday party for Faliela together with our summer BBQ party. Well, technically summer is not until June but it will be too hot by then to hold an outdoor party.
It was not a fancy party. We just threw a simple deco based on the theme color of the party : ORANGE. Adilla helped us with the decoration and she suggested to throw in another color- pink which is actually a very nice combination! Kalau wedding maybe sarat lah, but it is for a kid birthday party, the more the merrier :D
Orange. I felt like I were in the Netherlands ;p

My anak dara

We ordered the cakes and cupcakes from "Let Them Eat Cake". They actually messed up our order, the cupcakes were supposed to be decorated with orange and pink frosting instead of this, but the cupcakes were delicious though. But we are not going back to that shop ever again.
A custom banner costs about $30. We decided not to spend that much money for a banner that will be put up for one day. So, Adilla used her creativity to make one out of a plastic tablecloth. Hehe.

The guests

Faliela's cake. We could not get her a number one cake since we ordered just a few days before the party.

I still could not believe she is one ;)

Thank god for Andrew. At least Faliela has a friend at the party. Hehe. She was just 2 weeks at her new daycare so we haven't really know other parents to invite them to the party.

Thank you Sandy for taking all these pictures. I hope you had lots of fun!

The next party for Faliela will not be until she is 5 years old at least. I am on a principle not to pamper my daughter that much. Faliela, jangan mintak mommy buat birthday tiap-tiap tahun okay.
Yosemite National Park
It was quite funny how we end up with the decision to make a trip here. During our flight to New York on our last vacation, we sat beside a drunken old man which was a very nice and chatty guy. Jai memang suka sangat melayan orang sembang-sembang ni so they moved on from one topic to another and another....... (sampai kitorang tak leh tido sebab kena layan dia sembang). He found out we were on vacation and going to Niagara Falls and he asked us whether we have visited Yosemite National Park. Upon finding out we have never been to Yosemite despite the location which is only 4 hours drive from our house, he was flabbergasted sampai satu plane dengar kitorang tak pernah pergi Yosemite. Boleh?
Well, truth speaking, we are not into nature. I am just into big cities ;) But we make it a point after our conversation with that guy to make a quick trip to Yosemite. We are already in California for 4 years and will be leaving for good next year, so better now or never. The best time to visit Yosemite according to that guy is in May, before the Memorial weekend but since I was busy with may labwork and could not go off on Saturday, we decided that the first week of June will be the other best option since I am in the intermission before the next experiment and it is still less crowded compared to the other weeks in summer.
We leave Davis on Friday, stayed a night at Mariposa and the next morning, we headed to Yosemite. Tee, a lecturer from UPM who happened to be here for sabbatical joined our family trip. Nasib baik lah dia ikut, ada kawan Jai buat sembang. Aku kalau masuk kereta drive lama-lama confirm tidur.
 Mariposa Grove
Did a 0.5 mile hike to Grizzly Giant. Thank god I bought this baby carrier from JumpSac Baby Sling for this trip. I love it!

Wildflowers-lovely!

My favorite pic-from Glacier Point

My baby and one of the attractions in Yosemite- the Half Dome

You will be amazed to see people on top of the Dome. It takes about one day to hike until to the top of the Dome.

That is Tee! She worked in Animal Science Dept whom the lecturers have a close relationship with our faculty. We were gossiping about the lecturers that used to teach me when I was in DVM. Hahaha (ada makna).
One of the many falls in Yosemite. This is the Yosemite Waterfall which usually dry out by the end of summer.

Tunnel view of Yosemite Valley, overlooking El Capitan, Half Dome. Muka dah selenga sebab penat :p

We missed going to Tuolomne Meadows since it was already 5pm and we had to drive back for 4 hours. I do not anticipate another trip to Yosemite but who knows kan, tetiba rasa nak buat weekend getaway lagi. But I still love big cities, hehe.
Yosemite National Park, it's a wrap!

Wow, I could not believe I can write a post this long nowadays ;p

One

 Faliela, one year ago.

We were sitting side by side watching Faliela enjoying a swing ride when Jai whispered, "Tak sangka dah setahun dah Faliela"

I don't know how many times I wrote this but how time flies!

This time last year she was sitting on my bladder and I could not pee for 2 days-not without catheter. The pain was unbearable and I had so little energy left after 60 hours in labor. Looking back, it is all worth the pain I had to endure seeing her growing up right in front of our eyes.

Her arrival has positively transformed us to be a better person, health and spiritual wise. Jai who never likes eating green vegetable is now adding broccoli, green beans to his diet. On my part, it has been such an amazing year being a parent and a student, juggling between work and family.  Motherhood is the most precious gift I have ever received. I have made so much progress in my research work in this past one year, much more than what I achieved the previous 2 years before Faliela came into our life. Imagine how a tiny creature can transform your life. Faliela did, in a good way.

She is truly a blessing from above.

Happy Birthday Pila!

My first steps.... and exercise?

My first two steps was at 9 months and 3 weeks...

And now I am progressing to more-than-five steps. Yeay!

And errr, my first squat down exercise (tiru daddy's P90X work-out)

Oh yeah, daddy has to treat mommy Joe's CrabShack since daddy said I will only walk at 11 months. Boo daddy, mommy wins!

Yours truly,

Faliela

P/S: Mommy is too busy so I asked daddy to type this out for me-- untuk tatapan tok and tok wan ;)

Glücklich

It seems that my 2012 is off to a good start.

I am (extremely) euphoric due to several reasons:

1. The experimental assays that I have been trying to optimize for over a year is up and running. My theory is right. I don't have the right test subjects and all along, I thought I don't have the right antigen but it was not the case. In a layman term, I resolved the main obstacle of my Ph.D thesis.

2. We have a functional family again. Faliela has her mommy and daddy all the time on weekends. Jai had been wanting to do an occasional double job, but I told him, money can never buy happiness.

3.  I weigh the same weight when I was 14 years old. Although this is not actually a recent news to share but as a continuation of my breastfeeding(BF) post, I could not stressed enough the advantages of BF and how BF has positively toned my body back into pre-pregnancy weight.

My weight never goes below 51 kg for more than a decade

4. My first co-authored paper has been accepted to the Journal of Virus Research. I may say, from all the authors, I probably give the least contribution but I am glad my work in 2009 is being recognized. Now, it is time to get back to writing my first first-author paper. I realized getting a manuscript to be published is not easy. It took 4 months for this paper to get accepted. When there is a will, there is a way. Insya-allah

5. Faliela's sleeping schedule has been crazy these last few weeks. I was really hoping it was due to teething and few days ago, her middle upper incisor teeth bud out. Thank god! It was funny that we were keep on checking her lower gum cos it is usually goes in that order, but not in her case apparently. I am happy the cause of her sleeping problem has been identified, not much on her teething cos nursing her is more painful now than ever.

6.  I am happy for my 'teman seperjuangan' on receiving a great news. I understand how does it feel to wait this long and to sacrifice time we do not have. This is not my news to share with all of you so I will leave it as vaguely as it could be .

7. Last but not least, I am happy to see this girl's smile. Everyday.

My breastfeeding experience

I have promised myself to get this post out of my draft box once I completed my writing deadlines. So, here it goes.

Faliela has been exclusively on breastmilk  for a bit over 8 months now. For one that aim to breastfeed up til 2 years (or at least 1 year), the journey is still a long way to go. I decided to put it in writing sooner, in case my memory ceased to store the first few months of experience which I value tremendously.

There were several times during this period that I often reconsidered my decision to fully breastfeed Faliela but alhamdulillah, I stuck to my guns. To note, the breastfeeding class I attended help a lot. I have compiled a file full of breastfeeding information and I am glad I get it organized as I often referred to it whenever I encounter problems. If I did not attend those classes, there were probably few misconceptions which will lead to the failure of me breastfeeding Faliela successfully.

The first week was hard, especially when I was still recovering from the post-op/delivery pain. The reclining hospital bed did help a lot in terms of positioning, but once I went home, positioning was such a nightmare. I was blessed to have a baby who pro at latching from day 1. But still, I had a cracked nipple the first week of breastfeeding and probably few more incidents of bleeding/cracked nipple after the first week. I applied some lanolin oil but found that, air-drying my nipple and applying some breastmilk around the area after nursing is the best treatment.

I had no idea whether I have started producing milk/colostrum or not, neither I bother to check. From the breastfeeding class I attended, I knew Faliela just need about one tablespoon at day 1 so I did not bother to express my milk. The next day when the paed came in for check-up, she told me Faliela had enough milk (probably more milk) based on her poo. I started to feel 'engorged' the second week after delivery. Followed by a big lump at my axillary area. I thought it was my lymph node that got swollen, but later to find out, it was a blockage of milk duct. And it was painful. I did not learn this part from breastfeeding class. After a few research on the website and a trial-and-error method, the best way to relieve a blocked milk duct (at least for me) is by pumping and at the same time, massaging the lumpy area towards your nipple. I have tried applying warm compression but it doesn't always work.

I started expressing as soon as the 'engorgement' period occured. At first, I was reluctant to use a manual pump, afraid that I will increase the milk production and being engorged, I do not want to have blocked milk duct all the time. But hand pumping was such a pain in the b*tt, so I decided to just manual pump everytime I started to feel engorge. After seeing the volume of my milk production each day, I decided to invest on buying Medela Freestyle and I am glad I did. I have more than enough milk on the first day I started working. More than enough that our freezer get overflowed. Luckily, Sandy, a friend of mine offered us to borrow her chest freezer. Thanks Sandy, if you ever read this!

A major transition awaited me when I went back to work. Whenever I have major experiments, I barely have enough time to eat lunch let alone expressing my milk. So, I improvised a little bit. I ate lunch and expressed my milk simultaneously. Most of the time, I get to express 3 times from 10 am-5pm but when I am too overwhelmed with work, I could only do it twice. So, basically, I don't have a fixed routine but I try my best.

As Faliela started on solids, my milk production has been decreasing gradually. Now, I understand why breastmilk production is based on 'supply and demand' concept. I am no longer getting 15-20 oz at work. Those days, my stored breastmilk was sufficient for a 3-month period. Now, my milk production is around 7-10oz, the same amount Faliela drinks when she is in her daycare. So, I am now starting to do extra session before I hit the bed just to make sure I have sufficient supply. Itulah, dulu malas lagi nak pump, sekarang dah tinggal sikit baru nak pump banyak kali.

During a random conversation with my supervisor, she told me about her failure to breastfeed her daughter and how her daughter battled with brief period of obesity when she was a teenager. My supervisor linked it to the fact that her daughter was on formula milk and she said research have shown that formula-fed baby is prone to obesity during the later period of their life. I don't know how true is the fact but I know that if Faliela contracted flu or cold from me, she usually clears it out within 2-3 days. I made sure I gave her my recently expressed milk during the period she was down with cold/flu as it carried the passive antibody.

There are too many advantages of breastfeeding your baby that I can possibly write. But one thing for sure, I feel a sense of pride whenever people ask me what did I feed her as Faliela is one lil chubby baby. So, being a breastfeeding mother myself, I salute those who have been breastfeeding their baby. Not to mention, partners who gave their full support and yes partners, it is extremely important. I am blessed to have a supportive husband. It is definitely a bumpy journey but as long as you have the motivation and positive attitude, insya-Allah the journey will get easier day by day.

As quoted from this article " I will always look back on my 'breastfeeding working mothers' days with immense satisfaction. A mother’s few months of sacrifice is a baby’s lifetime of goodness."

The good old days ;)

Happy 6 months old!

Dear Faliela,

You are 6 months old. Mommy bought you a slice of cake to celebrate this one-in-a-lifetime moment. Mommy is so busy with work, otherwise mommy will bake you a cake herself. Mommy and daddy are blessed to have you in our life. Although mommy scolds you whenever you throw your tantrums, believe that mommy loves you from the bottom of her heart. Your smile always make mommy's heart melt after a long day at work. With that, mommy hopes you will stay as a happy and strong baby, insya-Allah.

Yours sincerely,

Mommy

Traveling with infant

As I promised, this post is meant to share some tips on traveling with infants.

Weeks before my departure, I did some internet research on the do's and dont's when traveling with infants. I will give you the link of one of the best posts I came across at the end of this writing.

  • Kids have problem to balance the pressure of their ears during take-off and landing. Provide them with something to chew/suck on such as pacifier, bottles or nurse them directly. Technically, because their seatbelt is attached to one of the parents (if you are purchasing on lap ticket), the mother can always nurse them directly during take-off and landing. We don't want to introduce pacifier to our baby, but we brought one, just in case, and Faliela kept spitting it out from her mouth. So, we did our best to hold the pacifier on her mouth. Fortunately, by the time the plane took off or landed, Faliela dozed off to sleep already!
  • Dress yourself comfortably. As Faliela is exclusively on breastmilk and I didn't bring any expressed breast milk(EBM) on board, I decided to wear loose or button-shirt and don't forget to bring your nursing cover! You can actually bring EBM or your own baby food on board but make sure to declare during security check point and bring it in smaller quantities (about 3 oz). Some airports require you to 'taste' your own EBM just as a safety precaution.
  • Dress your baby comfortably. We dressed her in her pyjamas so that I don't have to put her socks on. Bring extra clothes for your kids as well as for you in case you have a major spit-up. Faliela used up all 4 clothes that we brought on board. Terkena poo lah, milk spit-up lah etc. So do bring at least 5 extra clothes for your baby.
  • Try to get flight that is during your baby's nap/bedtime. Both of our flights were at night, and from the total duration of 20 hours, she slept about 2/3 of the time.
  • Bring some toys on board. We brought some toys such as rattles so that she won't get bored whenever she's awake. In case for toddlers, I saw some parents brought their own portable DVD player (especially if you are on a short-duration flight) and played cartoons to occupy their kids.
  • If you need to carry a handbag, a sling handbag is recommended. The strap of shoulder handbag will usually get in the way when you are holding your baby, so when using sling handbag, you will have 2 free hands!
  • Usually on a long-haul flight, they will give you a bulkhead seat (where you have wall in front of you) which means you have to stow your bags in the overhead compartment during take-off and landing, so don't forget to bring out the important stuffs such as toys,pacifiers/bottles, washcloth. I separated them in one transparent bag (such as Ziploc bag) so that whenever we have to put our bag away, I can just pull out the Ziploc bag from my handbag.
  • You can also put diapers and wipes in one mini bag (again, Ziploc bag) so that you don't have to carry diaper bag into the toilet. There is not enough room to begin with, so make sure you bring only the necessary items.
  • Last but not least, if your baby is crying, try your best to entertain or distract her. It is really annoying to let your baby crying and parents did nothing to calm their baby down.

2 months old Faliela

My little baby hits 2 months, 2 days of age. We raised her alone without anyone's help for 2 weeks now and as the result, I lost another 2 kg. A lot of 2s there :P

It was amazing to see how fast she grew in 2 months time. From a tiny little creature, she has now becoming a taller and chubby-geram-nak-cubit baby :D With that, she has officially sleeping in her crib as she has outgrown the bassinet, but she is still rooming-in with us. Daddy changed his mind of having Faliela to sleep in her own room, haha! Daddy's little girl lah katakan :P

As for other baby gears we bought for her, we have used almost all of them except for stroller. Pat on my shoulder for not going bonker on buying her things. And I don't think we'll be using it in the near future as both of us are obsessed with babywearing :D  Faliela likes it too as she will doze off most of the time when she's in it.

She is now able to make a conversation with us in her own language and most importantly (or cutely I must say), she is now able to smile ;) Unfortunately, she does not really like tummy time and whenever I put her on her tummy, she will scream (oh, she has high frequency voice!)

Faliela is already sleeping through the night for a stretch of 8-9 hours and considering one of my hobbies is sleeping, alhamdulillah and God bless, He heard me :D Someone told me the sleep cycle will change again, nevertheless, life is a bliss (for not having to wake up at night :P) for now. Hehehe.

At first, we thought she is a difficult baby, always wanna cry whenever she wants something. But as the days past by, we figured out she is actually an easy baby. Since Jai is working in the afternoon, being alone with her from 5pm til midnight, I usually will be able to settle with house chores, fixing a quick dinner and such.I even brought her for groceries shopping all by myself!

Anyway, here are some pictures of my grown-up Little Shaolin :)

She can grasp rattles!

My sanctuary

I've been eager to make use the lactation room since I was pregnant.Selalu masuk bilik tuh untuk solat but I felt uncomfortable since I know some other women might need that place for pumping. Now, it's my turn to utilize the room for a right reason :D

The breastpump is a hospital-grade breastpump and I had to buy another kit in order to use the pump. Verdict: The suction is better than Medela FS, iyelah hospital-grade kan, mestilah bagus. But it doesn't have the 2-phase expression system so kena stimulate milk let-down by some other means.Other moms use their kid's picture like the one right here. Lepas nih leh letak gambar Faliela dekat sini :) Or I could also use Faliela's worn clothes which smell like milk spit-up. Haha!

This room is pretty busy. I know there are 5 other moms using this room as well, so I usually have to wait for my turn during the peak hours. There's another room nearby but since my work is not really on full swing right now, I can afford to wait but I guess in the future, I have to opt for another lactation room nearby. I could not imagine how things would be when I have back-to-back experiments in the future.

Oh well, when there's a will, there's a way. Insya-allah.

And here I presented my almost-2-month-old baby yang sudah botak :D
